Create a channel from any channel picker
Make a new Discord or website chat channel straight from a channel picker, pick who can see and use it role by role, and the bot makes it for you.
On this page
You don't have to make a channel in Discord first and then come back to pick it. Every channel picker in your dashboard has + Create a new channel… at the top of its list. Pick it, fill in the window, and the new channel is picked for you.
Make a Discord channel#
Voice channel lists (like the member counters) make a voice channel; the rest make a text channel. The window's title says what the channel is for, like Create a new channel – Server online.
The name box only takes what Discord allows: text channels get lower case letters, numbers, - and _ (spaces turn into dashes as you type), and voice channels can use capitals, spaces and emoji, up to 100 characters.
With a category picked you choose Sync with the category (the channel gets the category's permissions and follows them when you change the category in Discord, like a channel you make there) or Custom permissions. Without a category you always set your own.
Everyone can read and write, Everyone can read only (good for logs and announcements) or Private (only the roles you add can see it).
Pick a role from your Discord server, then tick View channel, Send messages, Manage messages, Manage channel and the rest. Voice channels have Connect, Speak, Video, Mute members and Move members.
The bot makes it in Discord, usually within a few seconds, and picks it. Save the page to use it.
How the ticks work (custom permissions):
- @everyone: ticked is allowed. An everyday permission (view, send, reactions, files and so on) left unticked is turned off for everyone in this channel.
- Other roles: ticked is allowed. Unticked keeps whatever the role has server-wide, so a moderator role keeps its powers unless you change them in Discord.
- Staff permissions (Manage messages, Manage channel, Mention @everyone, Mute and Move members) are only ever given, never taken from @everyone, so moderators who have them server-wide keep them.
The bot always keeps access to the channels it makes, so it can post its messages there. A synced channel gets an extra permission for the bot only when the category would keep the bot out; Discord then shows it as not synced, and the bot tells you so.
You can change any of this in Discord: right-click the channel, Edit Channel › Permissions.
Make a website chat channel#
The channel pickers for your website chat (Edit server › Website chat) have the same option if your community can have its own channels (an FSG Supporter tier). Pick who can View and Send, role by role, using your community's chat roles. It's ready at once. Change it later in your community's chat settings.
